About Us

How it all began, a few fisho’s and a local tackle retailer were the beginnings of which lead to the Feilding Surfcasting Club being established in 1997. The unique thing about our club is that we are an inland surfcasting club, so we don’t really have a local beach as such instead we have the option to fish three coastlines within 2 hours drive of Feilding.

The Feilding Surfcasting Club “our club” is a relatively small club with a membership of around 50, this gives us a great base and a committee with plenty of knowledge but also a smattering of new blood each year. Feilding’s generous boundaries go from Porangahau on the East coast around to Patea on the West coast.

Having three different coastlines enables us to fish no matter what the wind or swell conditions. This versatility also means that we are fishing water within close proximity of four different surfcasting club boundaries. Which gives us an opportunity to meet with members from other clubs and learn different fishing tactics for different areas, beaches and fish species.

Activities and Annual events

NZACA – Each year our club gathers a team to attend the NZACA (New Zealand Angling & Casting Association) National Championships. We compete as individuals and as teams in the Shore, Boat and Casting Sections with great results over the years. They have sections for Juniors, Seniors, Veterans and Golden Oldies all of which compete for combined point’s totals which go towards the Top Club Award.

Open Season and Winter Fish season – The club boundary is from Patea River across to Blackhead Point, North end of Porangahau Beach, making way for for weather conditions being unfavorable on either side. Our fishing years starts on 1st June each year with a handbook issued to financial members, outlining dates for our fishing competitions, rules, club records and results from previous years, most of which are found on our website.

Inter-club competitions – Each year we compete against both Pania Club, in Hawkes Bay, and Wellington Club. This is a great opportunity to fish outside our usual boundary and meet with like minded fishermen, giving us an insight to their local haunts. We usually travel as a team and a great weekend to be had.

Dry Casting – With some of the top casters in the country, our club meets a couple of times a year to measure our casting distances and accuracy on land. Along with club records and trophies up for grabs we also enter the NZACA Postal Casting competition annually trying to improve each year with coaching from club members to all age groups.

Annual Prize giving – The club has had various trophies donated over the years covering most categories fished for throughout the year. A night to put the glad rags on and meet on a social occasion with out the worry of swell, bait or will I need a 4×4 drive.

Moki $1000 – The club hosts what has now become our annual Moki $1000 surfcasting competition held at Ngawi in the month of November. This competition is organised by the Feilding Surfcasting Club and is a well attended event as an overnight fish, with most competitors from the lower north island. A well sponsored event with both cash and spot prizes a plenty.
